Job Summary
The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary floor surfaces throughout the nursing facility. This role supports resident safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance by performing routine and deep floor care using approved equipment, chemicals, and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine and periodic floor care, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, buffing, burnishing, stripping, and waxing of various floor surfaces (vinyl, tile, carpet, and specialty flooring).
- Operate and maintain floor care equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, extractors, and wet vacuums.
- Clean and maintain resident rooms, hallways, common areas, nursing stations, dining areas, and administrative spaces as assigned.
- Follow infection control, sanitation, and safety protocols in accordance with facility policy and regulatory standards.
- Use cleaning chemicals properly, following Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and dilution guidelines.
- Identify and report floor damage, safety hazards, or maintenance needs to supervision promptly.
- Post safety signage (e.g., wet floor signs) to prevent slips and falls.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of janitorial closets and storage areas.
- Assist with emergency or spill clean-ups as needed.
- Interact respectfully and professionally with residents, families, and staff.
- Comply with HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and facility policies at all times.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous experience in floor care, housekeeping, or environmental services, preferably in a healthcare or long-term care setting
- Ability to operate floor care equipment safely
- Knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals and floor care techniques
Preferred:
- Experience in a nursing facility, hospital, or healthcare environment
- Floor care or environmental services certification (where applicable)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
- Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching
- Ability to work around cleaning chemicals and equipment
Work Environment
- Healthcare setting with exposure to residents, staff, and visitors
- May involve exposure to bodily fluids, chemicals, and wet surfaces
- Requires adherence to infection prevention and PPE protocols
